Reader Photogra-Momma Wendy Ellis!

Each month I’ll feature one of our reader photogra-mommas! This month, I’m happy to introduce Wendy Ellis of Expressions by Wendy. Here’s the information she sent about herself and her studio to Moms With Cameras. Thanks Wendy – it’s so nice to get to know a little bit about you!

“I am Wendy Ellis and I am a photographer in the Dallas, Texas area.  I am married and have two gorgeous daughters, ages 7.5 and 5.5 (the half-years are VERY important – to them, anyway.  LOL)  Photography is my second job after being a mom.  My husband is extremely supportive of my business and helps me write my annual business plans, set pricing for new products, build promotions, etc. Without such a supportive and loving family, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.

I have been in business for 5 years, and I specialize in babies – newborns are my absolute favorite!  They are my living, breathing Playdough and they help me get my baby fix!

Mine is the same story as a lot of photogra-mommas, I guess.  I’ve always loved taking pictures.  Being a Type A personality, I wanted the pictures to be perfect.  So I started taking online classes and workshops, joined the local PPA guild, and tried to learn everything I could possibly learn.  Before I knew it, I was in business.  Word traveled fast!  A business was never really the goal – I had primarily just wanted to be able to take really great pictures of my daughters.  But it grew from there.  I’ve been sleeping/eating/breathing photography since.  I feel like everything I see now I’m “seeing” through my viewfinder. It’s a complete obsession!

I have a small studio in my home where I use both natural light and strobes, and I mostly photograph newborns and babies less than age 1 here.  For family sessions and most other sessions I usually go on location to wherever we (the client and I) decide will fit the style of portraits for which they are looking.

Working with newborns so much, I’ve really become quite the Baby Whisperer.  I’ve discovered that the spot right in between the eyebrows, just above the bridge of the nose, is like a “button” for most babies.  Firm, but not hard, steady pressure here with my thumb will almost always make the baby close their eyes and fall asleep if their eyes are getting heavy. :)  For some reason, no other finger except the thumb has the same effect!  LOL

My favorite product I offer my clients is the custom designed coffee table book.  Especially for my repeat clients.  I can only sell the same client so many wall portraits and canvases.  But the books are a great way to get more of their images in a way that really tells a story.  I’m ALL about telling a story.  Rarely does one single image completely capture the personality and beauty of a person because every person is multifaceted.  And I love doing digital design because it’s another extension of my creativity!

I wish that I could say that I have tons of images of my family all over my walls at home.  Between running my business and getting as much quality time in with my family as possible, I hardly have time to produce my own wall art.  And I would never do anything that causes me to spend less time with my wonderful family!  But I’m constantly clicking away with my family and recording great images of them!  I also really love digital designing, so I love to create custom coffee table books of my family each year.  I make an album for each girl so they will be able to treasure all of those images always.”

Here are a few of Wendy’s favorite images!
