Project52 | Week 4 Image & Week 5 Theme

Hi there mommas! I am totally just coming in under the wire, but I made it! While I have loved the 60-degree weather we’ve been having (It is January, right??), I haven’t had much inspiration for “cold” images. So, I finally threw together a cocktail and photographed that. While I’m definitely not in love with my image, I am happy that I still had the discipline to complete the assignment, and a girly beverage consolation prize could be worse!

Here are some of my favorites from the pool!! I am so impressed with the creativity and beauty behind these images!!! Many thanks to those of you who are adding images to our Project52 Pool! For those of you who are  just joining us, please feel free to jump in anytime!

Next week’s theme is “home”. I can’t wait to see what you all contribute!!!

Family Fridays | Show ‘em that you love ‘em

I love my husband. I mean LOVE him! We met in high-school and have been married for ten years. I’m sorry to admit that over the past few years, while my love for him has not diminished, my time for him most certainly has. The demands of motherhood and business ownership have edged him out of the #1 spot on my priority list . . . at least as far as how much time I allocate for him. Because he doesn’t fall apart when things don’t go his way (and lets face it . . . both children and clients can do that!), he winds up silently suffering while moving ever closer to the proverbial back burner.

A few nights before the close of 2011, as my husband and I lay in bed, he confided that he felt uncared for. Who can blame him? If he worked the hours I worked, and came to bed long after I went to sleep, I can guess I would feel more than a little ignored. As we talked, we formulated a plan to put him back in the place where he belongs – at the top of my list.  He knows there will still be the occasional late night, or a weekend where I have to hammer out a lot of work, but he knows these will be the exception, and that he can count on me to be his wife . . . and his friend . . . again.

Our plan looks like this:

* I stop working when he gets home most nights of the week. Unless I am taking client appointments that evening, my laptop will not be joining us while we watch Castle on the couch.

* We have a sitter in place who will come twice a month so we can go out on a real, actual, get gussied-up and leave-the-house date.

* On the other two weeks, we will have an at-home date night, and we’ll do things like share a bottle of wine and chat, watch a movie together, or rock out with Guitar Hero.

* We will go to bed at the same time on most nights. It’s a little hard to be close with one another as a married couple when one spouse’s nighttime buddy is a glowing monitor display.

* We’ll communicate. My husband suffered for years before finally admitting that he felt like I didn’t care for him like I should. I am hoping that with our new commitment to lovingly tend to our marriage that we will both be able to speak up at the first sign that things are looking unbalanced.

Mommas, it is so easy to think that you will have more time with your significant other. That you can tend to that person’s needs later and it will be okay. But the truth is that we will always have a vast array of responsibilities and hopes competing for our time and attention, and that tomorrow we may think the same thing all over again. For those that have committed their lives to us, who need their partner, lover, friend . . . let’s make an effort to make sure they know they’re loved.

To my hubby, if you’re reading this, I love you H.P.

Have a great day everyone!

Amy Bourne - This literally made me tear up. Poor Hubby! This probably happens a lot in our field of work- and my husband is the “suffer in silence” type as well. I should probably go ahead and put this plan into action before he gets to his breaking point as well! Thanks Emily….and enjoy your nights out with your fine looking man!!

January 27, 2012 - 10:37 am

Harry Potts - He is more than cute, he is gorgeous! Thank you for the wonderful post, you are an awesome, loving, caring wife and a great photogra-momma. I love the plan we have put in place and I already feel more important and feel my love growing ever stronger for you. I love you E.P.

January 27, 2012 - 10:46 am

Ashlee - I don’t know if you will read this yourself, but I am so proud of you for sharing your vulnerabilities in your marriage and the steps your taking to make it better. It takes real courage.

Also, I had a question about WPPI? I REALLY want to attend your class that is selling out quickly. Can you please expain how I need to sign up, and the cheapest route in doing so if all I bascially want to do is attend YOUR class?

Warm hugs
AB

January 27, 2012 - 10:57 am

Janene Snyder - My husband isn’t so silent about his suffering so it is something we’ve addressed from the start. :)

January 27, 2012 - 11:20 am

Marion Niewald - spoken from the heart! Thanks for sharing this story of your personal life. Your plan sounds great and I am sure it will work well too.
My best wishes,
Marion

January 27, 2012 - 12:18 pm

Megan Johns - He IS cute! Sometimes (okay, a lot of the time) I feel like my husband lets me get away with things like this too. He is really inclined to do anything that he thinks will make me happy, including suffering in silence. He is such a great person and supports me like no one else. I owe him some of me. This is why he is one of my 5 resolutions for 2012. Thanks for reminding me!

January 27, 2012 - 1:02 pm

Jennifer Taylor - Great advice!! It’s so important not to lose each other in the craziness of every day life!!

January 28, 2012 - 3:54 pm

Emily - Thanks for your sweet words, everyone! It means so much to me!
Ashlee, I’m not sure if you can register for just a master class, or if you have to do a full wppi registration and add my class. If you contact WPPI (www.wppionline.com) they will ha e that info for you. I hope you can attend – I’d love to meet you!

January 28, 2012 - 8:44 pm

Laurel - I love this post. Thank you so much for sharing. The part about having different bedtimes is something we deal with too. My husband goes to bed early and I am up late most nights on my computer. It’s something we have struggled with for years and have had the same conversations. We have been working at it too. I’m glad to hear we are not the only ones. :) Love your site.

Whatcha Wanna Know?

Yesterday I received a message from a photogra-momma who wrote, ” “Hi there! I wanted to let you know that on your advice, I did my very first in-person sales presentation on Monday, and my sale was $1,188, which is approximately 10x my average online sale.” I beamed after reading that! This one reader made a big change in her business for the better. It was probably scary. It was probably hard. BUT, her big change brought big reward, and I am so incredibly proud of her!

This year we are very committed to helping those that want to make a change. I want to help the mommas who really want to do something special with their business. I want to help those who strive to create better images, run better businesses and do things in a way that benefits their families, clients and this industry. I am so excited to see what our community of photogra-mommas can do to make big changes this year!

One of the things I’ll be doing in 2012, is video (gulp!) posts answering some of your questions. I want you all to get to know me better . . . to know that I am your cyber-friend and that I’m here to help you grow. I am terribly nervous (i.e. totally freaking out) about getting in front of a camera, but I guess if I’m asking you to get a bit uncomfortable and to do things differently, I should do it too!

Every couple of weeks, I’ll sit down and answer a couple of your questions. If you have something that you know you’d love to have answered, please post the question on our facebook page! Those who submit the questions I select to answer will win a little something from the MWC store!

And thanks to you, I am making huge changes in the way that I do things and am planning on this being my year!!! I LoVe Moms with Cameras and everything that goes with it!!! My question right now has to do with presenation of your work at your client’s home …. is Pro Select a must? or can you use say, Ariana’s Wall Display Guides to start off? I know I am not comparing apples to apples but wondering if I could use Ariana’s and get Pro Select later, when I make some money. Big mistake? Can you let me know?! Thank you sooooo much!! Donna

Featured Photogra-momma | Ariana Falerni

I am so excited to introduce you all to photogra-momma extraordinaire Ariana Falerni! She is simply lovely! Her photography is so gorgeous, and she designs amazing wall displays that are fantastic for showcasing your portraits as art for your clients! I know you all will adore her as much as I do!

Hi Ariana! Welcome to MWC! Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your business? Hi, thanks for having me! My business is two-fold, I am a photographer (maternity, newborns, young children, families) and also a designer.  Some of your readers may have heard of the Photographer’s Wall Display guides (I hope!)   They started out as a whim basically, but have since almost taken over my creative life -  I essentially shoot nowadays to keep my foot in the photography business so that I can keep getting ideas for new design products as well as keep the creative juices flowing!

I love your work! It’s so pretty and pure and clean. Can you tell us a little bit about your photography philosophy? What are you looking for when you shoot and how do you create that wonderful balance between great exposures and composition + fun, lighthearted posing? I’m looking for first and foremost beautiful light and the way that light can enhance the beauty of my subject.  But also my goal is to have the child’s personality shine through, even if the mom is mortified that her kids aren’t listening or looking at the camera – I will capture them as they are. If you have wild children, do you really want an image of them standing still and looking at the camera? Does that speak to who they are at this moment in time? Photography is like a window into the past, so if I can capture the feeling in a moment, or the connection between a family I’ve done my job.

What’s in your camera bag? What’s your very favorite piece of equipment? In my lovely mustard yellow JoTote Rose bag is my Canon 5D Mark II and a variety of lenses. The ones I use most often are my 70-200 2.8 vII – (this is my go-to most favorite lens of all time) my 24-70 2.8 for indoors and my 50mm 1.4 for newborns. The rest just collect dust!

What product do you offer that your clients can’t live without? I have to say that my clients have very varied taste! Lately I’ve been selling a lot of albums and people always love the mini accordions.

Can you share with us your favorite marketing strategy? What have you done that’s different in building your business? This one is hard for me to answer because I’m very low volume due to the fact that so much of my time is spent on my design products and I want to keep it that way, so more often than not I actually turn people away!  But, I would have to stress that I do not sell anything that doesn’t come with physical product. If you are selling digitals with no reference prints or anything but digital files you are missing a huge marketing opportunity. What if your client puts that disc in a drawer and never gets the canvas they said they would? Their friends will never see those images anywhere (Ok, after they share them on Facebook I mean!)

You offer a FANTASTIC product for photographers that help them in the sales end of their studios. Share with us about that, please! The Photographer’s Wall Display Guides is a sales tool first and foremost – it’s a series of templates with real room backgrounds that help their clients “picture their pictures” on the walls.  The idea behind them is that you need to show it to sell it. It’s not rocket science – but if you don’t show your client how amazing xy&z image will look together in so-and-so arrangement how can you expect to get them on board to decorate their home with your images?

There are so many other creative uses for the templates – from illustrating your pricing guide with examples, to doing blog posts about the impact that size can make to advertising canvas sales – those are just a few of the ways that my customers use these guides in their businesses.

Probably the best way to get an idea of what these tempaltes are and how they are helping photographers sell more is to see my product trailer video!

What have you found to be most successful in your own sales? Switching to in-person ordering! I can’t even tell you how much this has increased my sales and cut down on the email back and forth.. it’s not even a comparison! Plus, (and this is probably stating the obvious) using my wall guides. I show 5-10 different wall ideas at the end of every client slideshow. I also will mock up birth announcements and holiday card ideas ahead of time.. People are visual. You have to give them something to want!

You have the most adorable little guy! Tell us about your family and what you do to work towards balance between work and family. Thank you so much, I can’t disagree with you there:)So far our family is our three year-old son Jasper, my handsome and talented husband Jeff and our ancient blind/deaf shih-tzu Sammy. We are trying very hard to give Jasper a sibling, but we struggle with infertility, so I don’t know if it’s in the cards. We shall see! As far as work/life balance – I quite frankly am horrible at this! My husband complains that I’m always on the computer. There are no easy answers to this one I’m afraid!

Thank you so much Ariana for sharing with us! Can you tell our readers where they can find ya? Of course! You can find my photography website at www.arianafalerni.com, my wall guides at www.arianafalerni.com/design and my personal mommy blog (where I also blog about the business side of photography) at www.becoming-mom.net.

Here is some of Ariana’s amazing work!

And here are a couple of images from the newest sets of The Photographers Wall Display Guides!

Thank you so much Ariana for taking the time to share with us!!!

January 26, 2012 - 8:48 am

Emily - Hi Donna – I use them in Photoshop! :)

January 30, 2012 - 10:56 am

Sheila - Love the interview! I have a lot of Ariana’s wall guides and am so excited they will be available in ProSelect soon! I talked with her last week, and she is genuinely concerned over helping each photographer use them to boost their business. Ariana is definitely a great business role model for all of us!
